This year, the Stratford Festival and the uber talented Donna Feore, have tackled the musical production of Billy Elliot. Stratford is abuzz with a rumoured visit from Sir Elton John for opening week (side note – I cannot wait to see Rocketman). Last week, Chloe was my date for our first show of the season.

We prepared for Billy by watching the film version (now showing on Netflix) the night before. The movie is amazing. There is A LOT of swearing, which Chloe (9) claims was her favourite part. The movie also helped prepare us for the important and deep themes that run through the story – family, growing up, challenging authority and gender identity – just to name a few.

Chloe was also very excited to go as Nolen Dubuc’s (the actor that plays Billy) little brother is in her class at school and he would also be attending that night’s performance. We did bump into him and the two of them chatting about the play was adorable.

Special nights out for us usually begin with dinner at Pazzo’s Taverna. Chloe has been known to ask to speak to the chef to pay her compliments. This was the perfect start to our night.

Once we arrived at the theatre we took our time visiting the gift shop and taking photos around the garden. No matter how many times I attend a performance, I never tire of taking in the whole experience. It is such a magical place.

The production itself captured us from start to finish. Nolen’s performance – his ability to command an audience on a stage like the Stratford Festival – is simply remarkable. He is just 11 years old! We were mesmerized by the dancing. We laughed throughout. And while the most emotional parts – around Billy and his late mom – may have been missed by Chloe, they were not missed by the audience who let out collective sniffles after several touching scenes.

Billy Elliot is a beautiful story that is beautifully told. There are too many wonderful moments to name. See it if you can – even if it is just for the swearing.

A bit more…here is a great article on Nolen Dubuc. Also, how Elton John became inspired to write the music for the stage production.
